
Evergreen Ollywood Actor Uttam Mohanty passed away Recently on 27 feb 2025 leaving the odia film industry in shock. He was under treatment for pneumonia and liver cirrhosis at Medanta hospital in Gurugram. Many Political Persons & Celebrities came to his death funeral & shared their heartbroken condolence.

Mohanty’s childhood started in Baripada, where his Karan family has resided for generations, with his grandfather establishing their presence there 150 years prior. He received his primary education at M.K.C. High School, a period marked by his mischievous nature, often leading to complaints from beyond the school walls. Upon completing his matriculation, he pursued his intermediate and bachelor’s degree in science at Maharaja Purnachandra College in Baripada. It was during his college years that his passion for acting blossomed, consistently seeking out lead roles in theatrical productions. He shared a fervent enthusiasm for sports, particularly badminton and table tennis. Upon finishing his degree, he journeyed to Ludhiana to pursue chartered accountancy. Subsequently, he resided with his older brother, the late Arun Ku. Mohanty, in Kolkata for a period, enrolling in a chartered accountancy program. Baripada held a special significance for him.
Uttam Mohanty’s acting journey commenced with the Odia film ‘Abhimaan’ in 1977, and he has since graced over 150 films, including notable productions like ‘Nijhum Ratira Sathi’, ‘Phula Chandana’, ‘Jhiati Sita Pari’, and ‘Danda Balunga’. His talent extends beyond the silver screen, encompassing television serials such as ‘Sara Akasha’. Furthermore, Mohanty has showcased his versatility in 30 Bengali films and a Hindi film titled ‘Naya Zaher’.
He portrayed all types of characters like villain,hero, characters in movies which shows shows his versatility of his acting skills & love towards cinema. I still remember his negative role in ‘Rakhile Siba Mariba Kie’, innocent buy character in ‘To Binu Anya Gati Nahin’, Supporting role in ‘Badhu Nirupama’.
His filmography also encompassed approximately 30 Bengali films and a Hindi production titled “Naya Zaher.” Mohanty’s contributions extended to television as well, with appearances in several series, such as “Sara Akasha.”
Throughout his illustrious career, Mohanty garnered numerous accolades, including the esteemed Jayadeb Puraskar in 1999 and the Odisha Living Legend Award in 2012. He also received the Best Actor award at the Odisha State Film Awards on multiple occasions.
During the early 1980s, he starred in approximately 20 films alongside prominent actress Mahasweta Ray (Rasmi Ray). Despite their blossoming romance and plans for marriage, their relationship was short-lived, and they ultimately parted ways. Their final collaboration was the 1985 film “Palatak.” The duo reunited in 1988 for Prashanta Nanda’s “Ja Devi Sarbavutesu.” Subsequently, they appeared together in numerous films throughout the 1990s. Over fifty of his films feature Aparajita Mohanty, his wife, as his co-star. Their on-screen partnership began in the film “Astaraga” (1982), culminating in their marriage on May 17, 1987, at the Municipality Guest House in Bhubaneswar. Among the other actresses he has shared the screen with are Anita, Sujata, Tandra, Deepa, Baisali, Subhra Pati, and Rachana Bannerje.Danda Balunga is still Considred a Cult Classic.
Following 1995, his advancing age led to an increase in character roles. Films such as “Jashoda”, “Subhadra”, and “Kalamanika” showcased him in these parts. In the latter stages of his career, he also ventured into television, with serials like ‘Je Pakhi Ude Jete Dura’, ‘Sara Akash’, ‘Panatakani’, and ‘Uttaradayi’ gaining significant popularity. Notably, his portrayal of Bikhu bhai in ‘Sara Akash’ left a lasting impression. His Hindi television repertoire includes ‘Palash’, while his Bengali work encompasses ‘Bideshini Bohu’. Additionally, he has lent his talent to music albums and Bhajan renditions. For almost twenty years, Uttam Mohanty reigned supreme in Odia cinema, holding a dominant position throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
